Artifacts in the Christian Church The Church Building
Before St. Thomas’ Church was built people used to meet on a Sunday in what is now the ship inn, which is down by the Canal in Kilnhurst. This was because they had no church building. After meeting here for a while, the people set up a school in “INSERT NAME HERE!!!”. Then they built a house for the vicar, and finally in the 1850’s they build St. Thomas’ Church building. The building was consecrated in 1859. When the church was first built it didn’t have the room at the back, or the chancel, these where both added later.

Font
This is where children and babies are baptised. When a baptism happens the font is filled with water and the child or baby is held over it, while the vicar pours some water over the babies head. At this time the family promises to bring up the child in a Christian family, and promise that they will help the child know God.

The Lectern
The Lectern is where the bible is read from. The lectern is in the shape of an eagle, and it is standing on a globe. Many churches have eagle lecterns, this is supposedly because St. John was compared to an Eagle, and his book of the bible (the gospel of John) was about showing everyone in the world who Jesus was. This is why the lectern is shaped like an eagle standing on a globe

The Pulpit
This is where the vicar gives his talks or “sermons” from. He gives these at least twice a week on Sunday. He does this to teach us more about Christianity and Jesus

The Holy Bible
. The word Holy means something special from God, and the word Bible is the name for the Christian Holy Book. The Holy Bible is special to Christians for many reasons. Christians believe the Holy Bible is special because:
· The Bible was written by men, but inspired by God, because of this Christians believe the Bible to be completely true
· It tells them about God
· It tells them about Jesus
· It tells them how to live
· It tells them what is going to happen when they die
